Disabled Riding:

RideAbility Pine Island, MN $2,000
This therapeutic riding program currently stores patient records and first aid supplies in dusty, insecure space in the barn.  This Council grant will (partially) help them to purchase a used travel trailer to store these records and first aid equipment.  The trailer will also be useful when they go to parades & events; it will enable them to easily bring these records & supplies with them.

Sharadise Therapeutics Monticello, MN $3,000
This program currently operates with heat only in a small part of their indoor arena.  But they now have so many clients they are using the entire arena for classes.  This grant will assist in adding radiant heaters to the rest of the arena.  It will also provide some funds for educational & sensory equipment for their riders.  Part of this grant will be matched by local donors.

Victory Riders Rogers, MN $7,000
This program uses an indoor riding arena during winter.  It is currently unheated.  Now a local donor has donated a heating system to them.  This grant will pay for insulation for the arena, so the heating costs can be kept reasonable.   They will use volunteer labor, or raise money locally for installation.

Educational:

School District 287/Mn LINC 13 west metro school districts $3,500
This grant partially funds a therapy program “Kids and Horses” for special needs students referred from the 13 involved school districts.

University of Minnesota state-wide $3,500
This grant partially underwrites the cost of holding several 1-day “Regional Horse Owner Programs”
across the state next year.  These programs are held in local horse facilities and include talks from local horse experts on various aspects of horse ownership.  Typically 100-200 people attend each session.

Fairgrounds facilities:

St. Louis County Fair Hibbing, MN $3,500
This rather new fairgrounds (relocated in 1999) is heavily used in northern Minnesota.  They have a have a new barn, 2 outdoor show arenas, a warm-up arena, judges stand, and trailer parking.  However, the sound systems are antiques, moved from the old fairgrounds.  This grant will help purchase new, modern sound systems for their horse show arenas and warm-up area.

Cook County Fair/Sawtooth Mtn Riders Grand Marais, MN $3,500
This northern Minnesota county has been holding horse events at private farms, or in an inadequate hockey arena.  The County has donated land at combined fairgrounds & community recreation center for a horse facility.  This grant will help purchase fence panels for a new show arena at this location.  Grant is for materials, only; local volunteers will build the arena.

Jackson County 4-H/Fair Lakefield, MN $2,300
Horse activity at this county fair and 4-H program is growing, and need additional horse stalls.  They have a barn lean-to where these stalls could be added.  This grant will provide materials for the stalls, their volunteers will construct them.  They will also add a washrack nearby.

Cannon Falls Ridge Riders SC<;span> Cannon Falls, MN $5,000
This arena at the Goodhue County fairgrounds is seeing increasing use, and shows going later into the evening.  This grant will fund connecting electricity to the clubhouse/office/announcers stand, and facilities for adding lights to the horse show arena.

LeSueur  County 4-H Horse Project LeCenter, MN $3,500
Last year, this county fair barn had stalls for only about half the 4-H horse exhibitors, and had to borrow from other county fairs.  This grant will partially fund the purchase of additional stalls for their horse barn. Materials only; club volunteers will provide the installation labor.

Anoka County Fair Anoka, MN $7,000
This fairgrounds is in one of the fastest-growing horse areas in the state, and is heavily used for horse events.  They built a new horse barn, and have recently expanded that.  But they still show in a 40-year-old outdoor arena, which is showing its age.  This grant will help purchase materials to replace the horse show arena fencing.  Their volunteers will remove the old arena and install the new one.

Mn-Ia Arabian Club/Freeborn County Fair Albert Lea, MN $2,350
This show facility is used by many southern Minnesota horse events.  This grant will purchase materials that their volunteer workers will use to improve the indoor show arena: white paint for walls, corner panels and gates to separate spectators & horses, and sand to improve arena footing.

Anoka County 4-H Anoka, MN $3,000

The 4-H horse project owns various horse show equipment: timer & display board, radios, poles, cones, bridge, etc., and shares use of this with local Saddle clubs.  Much of this equipment has been used for years, and is in need of replacement.  This grant will help buy additions or replacements.

Miscellaneous other facilities:

Balkan Saddle Club Chisholm, MN $3,500
This show facility on the Community Center grounds has been using an old trailer house as an office, clubhouse and announcers stand for many years.  But now it’s about to fall apart.  This grant will help purchase materials for a permanent building and announcers deck as a replacement.

Camp Chicagami Eveleth, MN $1,500

This camp includes horse activities for adults & children at the camp.  The Council grant will help provide materials to remodel classroom & add tie stalls next door.  Materials only, volunteer labor, organized by a Boy Scout supervisor, will build the project.

Basic Animal Rescue Training (MVMA) state-wide $3,000
This program of the Mn Veterinary Medical Assn. provides training to first-responders (fire, police, & sheriffs) in dealing with animals in emergencies.  Subjects taught are restraint, handling, and basic rescue/first aid for animals.  This grant will help fund development of the course materials & computer information & website, and creating sample emergency rescue kits for first responders.

Wilton River Riders SC Waseca, MN $3,000
Together with the town, they have been improving this arena (tile and add fill, provide new arena posts). This grant will help purchase new fence panels to replace their decrepit ones.

Hamel Trail Dusters SC Corcoran, MN $2,500
This show grounds has been used for 50 years by many saddle clubs, 4-H, & other horse groups.  They are now in the midst of a 3-phase project to repair & upgrade the facility.  They have replaced the arena fence, and a donor is replacing & expanding the plumbing.  This grant will provide some funds toward replacing the lighting in the arena, and a new, re-wired sound system.

Flat Hills Arena Ortonville, MN $2,600
This fairly new arena is located on the far western edge of the state, where horse show facilities are few and far between.  This grant will help in providing sand, a sound system, & show equipment.

St. Croix Horse & Carriage Scandia, MN $2,000
This group actively promotes driving horses in the area, sponsoring several events, including the St. Paul Winter Carnival Sleigh & Cutter Rally.  The Council grant will help purchase PA equipment for use at these events, including announcing to the many spectators at the St. Paul Winter Carnival.

3 Rivers Park Mounted Patrol Medina, MN $2,549
This mounted patrol serves in the Suburban Hennepin Park system throughout Hennepin County.  They also served as mentors to other units, providing training for mounted patrols in Minneapolis and other cities, and hosting an annual fall training clinic.  Currently, they have several grazing pastures available, but no shelter in them.  This grant will purchase portable run-in sheds for use in those pastures, to provide shelter for their horses in hot or stormy weather.
